The Mississippi River Water Trail passes through the heart of North America and is deeply rooted in natural scenic beauty, Native American heritage and cultural history. Known as the Father of Waters, the Mississippi River gives visitors the chance to enjoy paddling through one of the most scenic stretches of the river in North America that is not only lined with majestic bluffs and full of wildlife viewing opportunities, but also provides plenty of places to stop and relax whether it be a remote island or exciting river city.
There are hard copy maps available for each pool on the maps page. We strongly encourage users to take along a Mississippi River Navigation Chart. Be Smart, always wear a lifejacket when on the water. Learn, camp, paddle, explore, bird watch, and fish the Mississippi River Water Trail on your next adventure!!Along each pool, you will find trip suggestions for beginners, intermediate
paddlers, and advanced users on the trip planner page. The Mississippi River Water Trail program encourages people to reconnect to the river by exploring and experiencing the river from the water. The trail is one component of the outdoor recreation experience available on the river, complementing the exisiting hiking and biking trails along the river. Compatible hiking and biking trails run along the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway.
The Mississippi River Water Trail is being developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers and partnering organizations. The Corps has developed rest areas for day use, primitive camping areas, as well as wildlife watching and interpretive opportunities.
The Mississippi River Water Trail Association was formed in 2006 and promotes the Mississippi River Water Trail (MRWT) and activities throughout the Mississippi River system. The Association coordinates volunteers to accomplish site improvements and maintenance of the MRWT and assists with related projects and events. The Association works with communities, organizations, and other agencies to further develop and support safe public use of the MRWT. All membership fees support the MRWTA and provide funding for special events.
